DIY Wood Sign | No Cricut Needed

I am on a roll with these DIY projects! They give me a little extra excitement throughout the day when I’m working on furniture orders. Not that working on furniture doesn’t make me happy!… I just love making stuff for myself too.

Have you ever wanted to make your own wood sign? Don’t have a cricut or vinyl making machine? Don’t fret! I don’t either and I made this super cute sign for my entryway!

Some of you might not know this but before I started my furniture business I made signs. Mostly with my own handwriting but I also did it this way as well. It became too stressful for me instead of fun so I stopped and took my business in a different direction. Now I just make signs for fun for myself. I had so much fun making this entry sign that I also made another! Checkout that cute little number two!

Let’s get started. Here’s what you will need to make your wood sign:

  • Piece of wood
  • Pencil
  • Pen
  • Tape
  • Computer & printer
  • Paint of your choice
  • Sandpaper
  • Sharpie paint pen and/or acrylic paint and paint brush
  • Tape measure or ruler

Here’s my piece of wood I started with. Just a random piece of pine. I painted it with some white chalk paint and rubbed a little dark wax on it.

Next I printed out my words on a piece of paper. You can use any font on your computer or find one on any font website. I chose this saying because I needed a sign at our front door to nicely tell people to take their shoes off when they come in the door.

Here is the exact quote. You can use this to copy my exact sign if that’s what you would like to do!

Shoe Sign

Next step is to flip your paper over and completely cover the back of the words with pencil. If you have a dark surface you can use chalk. It will show up better.

After that flip your paper back over. Center it to where you want it and tape it down on the corners. If you need help getting it straight use your ruler/tape measure.

After that take your pen and start tracing your letters! Make sure you press down hard enough but not too hard so your pen doesn’t pop through the paper. After that take off the paper!

Really simple! You should see your quote written in pencil. You can either paint it with a small paint brush or use a sharpie paint pen (I got mine from Michaels). They have different colors and different size tips you can choose from. I used a black one with a fine point tip.

Here it is! Don’t be upset if it’s not perfect. You can take a piece of sandpaper and rub it back and forth from side to side over the words. This will make your sign look distressed and it also distracts from your not so perfect lines!

I decided to add a wood border to mine. I just measured and cut small pieces of pine wood then used my nail gun to attach them. If you do this too make sure you stain your pieces before adding them to your sign!
